Café Ukiyo
My travels to South Korea and Tokyo inspired the café’s interior. I was in awe of the level of aesthetics and how everything looked so well put together, with the combinations of materials. I wanted to bring that feeling back to The Netherlands.
About the project
Café Ukiyo is located in Amsterdam, just outside the busy city center. It’s for everyone who wants to change scenery to chat, work or relax. Fresh pastries are delivered daily from a local pastry shop to give the best customer experience.
Techniques/skills used:
Conceptualising, 2D modeling, 3D modeling, colour blocking, digital collage making .
Programs used:
AutoCAD, Sketchup, VRAY render, Photoshop
I started with colour-blocking the space to see the best layout. The sitting area shouldn’t be too close to the entrance so that it wouldn’t be too crowded when entering the cafe.

Accessibility in UX helps make the design more inclusive. Accessibility can be, for example, making sure that the colours have enough contrast and giving textual feedback instead of only colour. That is something that I’ve been working on as a UX designer.
I was looking for a way to draw that line further into interior architecture. I looked for ways to include it in this project. I came up with the following:
Include a sign board that redirects customers to the toilet.
Make sure the pathway through the cafe and restroom has a diameter of at least 1500 mm. That is the minimum needed for people with wheelchairs to turn 360 degrees. The circles in the floor plan showcase the 1500mm turning space.
It’s necessary to make the restroom accessible by applying the requirements needed to make a restroom fit for disabled people.
The restroom has two rails for people to help sit and get up, according to the accessibility guidelines.
