Stepping Stone

Stepping Stone are about building and living together, while inspiring each other. That building part is why each block is made of a different stone type. It it it’s reference from the saying ‘stepping stone’. With this project, I want to bring the creative industry closer to the people.

About the project

I often see that the creative sector is a little hidden, and you, most of the time, don’t even know a lot of professions that occupy the industry. In the middle of the block is an exhibition centre where the creatives renting a space on the ground floor can showcase and sell their work.

The residents from the apartments and outside the apartments can come to visit. I made sure that there are big windows in the ateliers and centre so that it’s not hidden and hopefully gives the people a glimpse of what the creative industry is all about. Maybe it can sparkle collaborations and new clients.

Note: the floorplan of the apartment complex, the apartment block, and the expo space are in mm. Because I didn’t have the option to scale in Meters, I had to convert the design to mm. If I had the opportunity to export in Meters, I would’ve done that, but I only had the choice to export in mm or inches. I had to work with what I had.

Both floor plans are made on scale 1:250

The Expo Space

The expo space is where artists of the rented ateliers in the apartment block can show and sell their art. It’s an open space because the cashier needs an overview of the entering people and people in the expo space. The space is all white since its primary purpose is to showcase the art and, therefore, should not distract. You can see the expo as a blank canvas.

I wanted to let the lights blend in with the space. Hence why they are round, just like the space.

High windows let in a lot of natural light, allow people to see the artwork and motivate them to get inside. The transparency by adding big, high windows can bring the creative industry and people outside the industry closer.
